Around the Horn: Extra Innings for December 6

Wednesday, December 5, we had three Stocks to Watch, one Extra Inning and two Around the Horn subscription trades on our radar. Of these, three were profitable one was a scratch and two were no-shows.

Agco Corp (AG) was a Switch Hitter long for Wednesday’s Around the Horn subscription trade list. AG was gapped up in the morning, quickly filled the gap then took off long, triggering our entry. It was a bumpy ride, nearly stopping us out at the entry level before taking off again to the upside past the initial profit target. Exit was anytime at or after the initial profit target, or at the first sign of hesitation at the reversal of highs.

Nordstrom Inc (JWN) was a Fastball long for Wednesday’s Around the Horn subscription trade list. JWN was gapped up in the morning and began to fill the gap then began to pull back, triggering our entry. It traded up to the 50% to target level before sinking again. At the 50% to target level we bring our stop loss up to a breakeven stop and exit was back at breakeven, saving us a trip to the stop loss.

Agrium Inc (AGU) was a Backdoor Slider long for Wednesday’s Stocks to Watch trade list. There were at least two good profit opportunities in AGU today, with the first off the open at the entry level above yesterday’s high. Exit was on a breakdown of upside momentum and retracement of the sharp climb. Second entry, or if you missed the first one, was an hour or so into the morning off of a pullback that filled the earlier gap. Exit was similar, on a retracement of the upside surge.

Brookdale Senior Living Inc (BKD) was a long for Wednesday’s Extra Innings trade list. Entry was in the morning and with a stop at yesterday’s support keeping the trade alive early in the trading day. BKD rode the trend of the morning up, up and away, reaching a high above 34 before pulling back to the entry level. Exit was on the fall from these highs and cross of the 8 period moving average on the inability to reach previous high.

Extra Innings and Opportunities for Thursday, December 6, 2007:

As I look to the trades that did not trigger or triggered but traded back to entry today, I am not seeing Extra Innings as we generally think of them: as patterns that did not trigger or complete their potential in the direction originally identified. Actually, there may be reversal patterns on daily charts in JWN, AG, AGU, AZO and BKD. If the market reverses overall tomorrow, these might be areas to look to for intraday opportunities.
