Around the Horn: Extra Innings for January 10

Wednesday, January 9, we had three Stocks to Watch and two Around the Horn subscription trades on our radar. Of these, one was profitable, three were scratches and one was a no-show.

Tyco International Ltd New (TYC) was a Fastball short for Wednesday’s Around the Horn subscription trade list. Entry was in the morning, with several entry opportunities. TYC was a non-starter, however, hitting the 50% to profit target late in the day to pull our stop down to breakeven, which it then hit within the next half hour. I will be watching this one over the next few days.

Waddell & Reed Fncl Inc (WDR) was a Fastball short for Wednesday’s Around the Horn subscription trade list. Two entries in the morning tagged our price (traveling 10 cents against us before traveling 10 cents in our favor), and clearing out with a 10 cent loss each time kept us from at least one ride to the stop-loss. Entry closer to noon was the money trade, moving down to the 50% to profit target and then quickly to the initial profit target level. Exit was either a quick grab at this level or at the latest when WDR was back at the 50% to Target Level.

I have been remiss in publishing the trade results over the past week or so, and by way of correction, below is a round-up of the subscription trade results (those that hit for either a profit or loss) for trade dates January 4, 7 & 8:

Janus Capital Group Inc (JNS) was a Backdoor Slider short for Friday, January 4’s Around the Horn subscription trade list. Entry was in the morning on the gap down. JNS was not forgiving and there were no second chances for entries not taken. JNS traded down sharply to a consolidation level at the initial profit target, with an exit for all or partial shares at this level. Alert subscribers may have kept this on their watch list that day for a break below this consolidation, which yielded even bigger profits.

Brookfield Asset Management (BAM) was a Fastball short for Tuesday, January 8th’s Around the Horn subscription trade list. This was a frustrating run of things, with an entry in the morning that proceeded to trade to the stop loss level, though barely above except for a few stray ticks mid morning. Second entry was noon EST, trading straight to the 50% to target level and bouncing back to the entry, resulting in a scratch stop. We don’t take third entry, but that was the charm in this rocky ride.
