The day started out with a big rally from the get-go, and the indices rallied to new two-year highs. The Nasdaq 100 exceeded 2360, while the S&P 500 reached just under 1323 today. At that point they consolidated for a few hours, and then rolled over in the afternoon, only to bounce in the last hour to solidify the gains.

Net on the day, the Dow was up 69.48 at 12,161.63. The S&P 500 was up 8.18 at 1319.05, and the Nasdaq 100 up 11.00 at 2349.20.

Advance-declines were 21 to 9 positive on the New York Stock Exchange, and 18 to 8 positive on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was about 3 to 1 positive on New York on total volume of a light 865 million shares. Nasdaq traded about 1.75 billion shares traded and had about an 11 to 6 positive ratio.

TheTechTrader.com board was active and mostly higher today. Multiple point-plus gainers included Research Frontiers Inc. (REFR) up 1.84 to 9.14, Motricity, Inc. (MOTR) up 2.15 to 22.12, InterDigital, Inc. (IDCC) 2.69 to 53.50, IDT Corporation (IDT) 1.24 to 25.00, SodaStream International Ltd. (SODA) 1.89 to 44.38, and Chart Industries Inc. (GTLS) 3.15 to 41.21.

In addition, BroadSoft, Inc. (BSFT) advanced 1.70 to 37.39, Cognex Corp. (CGNX) 1.88 to 34.83, Mercer International Inc. (MERC) 1.37 to 9.79, and Unisys Corporation (UIS) 1.76 to 39.28, along with Silicon Graphics International Corp. (SGI) up 1.34 to 14.59 and TransGlobe Energy Corp. (TGA) 1.65 to 15.18.

Other point-plus gainers included Apple Inc. (AAPL) up 5.38 to 351.88, setting a new all-time high today at 353.25. American International Group, Inc. (AIG) jumped 2.18 to 42.18, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (CMG) 1.24 to247.55, Coinstar Inc. (CSTR) 1.48 to 40.44, Amtech Systems Inc. (ASYS) 1.06 to 28.22, Goldman Sachs (GS) 2.30 to 167.13, and Lululemon Athletica Inc. (LULU) 1.43 to 78.39.

Those were the point-plus gainers for today.

Among other gainers of note, Accuray Incorporated (ARAY) was up 62 cents to 9.97, Allot Communications Ltd. (ALLT) 79 cents to 14.43, Avalon Rare Metals, Inc. Ordina (AVL) 35 cents to 6.85, Warren Resources Inc. (WRES) 35 cents to 5.94, SMART Modular Technologies (SMOD) 57 cents to 7.51, TowerStream Corporation (TWER) 42 cents to 4.76, Repros Therapeutics Inc. (RPRX) 38 cents to 3.74, PetroQuest Energy Inc. (PQ) 72 cents to 8.47, ISTA Pharmaceuticals Inc. (ISTA) 47 cents to 6.82, Alon USA Energy, Inc. (ALJ) 71 cents to 9.50, and AXT Inc. (AXTI) 80 cents to 12.08.

Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, the indices were up sharply in the morning, flat midday, and then rolled over in the afternoon only to bounce in the last hour.

That’s the story today, the indices closing with another solid gain to more 2011 and two-year highs.
