Another Strong Stock Session

Another Strong Stock Session

The stock market indices had another strong session, gapping up at the opening, pausing for a bit, and then running to the session highs in the first couple hours. They rolled over hard by midday and retested, but successfully, and then bounced back, attempting to retest the highs late in the afternoon. But they failed to do so, and then rolled back a little bit to pare back the gains.

Net on the day, the Dow was up 61.53 at 12,288.17, the S&P 500 up 8.31 at 1336.32, and the Nasdaq 100 up 16.02 at 2397.94, reaching as high as 2403.52 today.

Advance-declines were about 3 to 1 positive on the New York Stock Exchange, and 2 to 1 positive on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was a little less than 3 to 1 positive on New York on total volume of a light 945 million. Nasdaq traded about 2 1/4 billion shares, and had a strong volume day with about an 8 to 3 positive ratio.

TheTechTrader.com board was mostly higher today. Multiple-point gainers were led by La-Z-Boy Inc. (LZB), up 2.36 to 10.64. Innospec Inc. (IOSP) advanced 2.97 to 26.45, Owens Corning (OC) 2.55 to 36.42, Insight Enterprises Inc. (NSIT) 1.46 to 19.09, Photronics Inc. (PLAB) 1.30 to 9.47, Noranda Aluminum Holding Corp. (NOR) 1.66 to 17.18, Frontier Oil Corp. (FTO) 1.93 to 27.95, DG FastChannel, Inc. (DGIT) 1.71 to 34.41, NXP Semiconductors NV (NXPI) 1.92 to 26.93, and Rocky Brands, Inc. (RCKY) 1.42 to 14.04.

In addition, Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM) was up 3.04 to 68.34 on solid earnings. Century Aluminum Co. (CENX) jumped 1.89 to 17.34, American Capital, Ltd. (ACAS) 68 cents to 9.40, Syneron Medical Ltd. (ELOS) 2.42 to 14.10, and Aaron's, Inc. (AAN) 3.48 to 23.85.

Among other gainers of note, InnerWorkings Inc. (INWK) was up 92 cents to 8.00, ValueClick, Inc. (VCLK) 1.49 to 16.29, Youku.com Inc. American Deposit (YOKU) 1.90 to 34.90, and Threshold Pharmaceuticals Inc. (THLD) 1.00 to 2.75, a big percentage gain there. Cyanotech Corp. (CYAN), 1.03 to 3.65, was also a big gainer, as was Cheniere Energy, Inc. (LNG), one of our current swing trade positions, up 71 cents to 8.96.

On the downside, Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) lost 2.41 to 186.62, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (CMG) 1.57 to 264.01, SodaStream International Ltd. (SODA) 1.68 to 42.77 and Travelzoo Inc. (TZOO) gave back 1.38 to 42.60.

Those were the only point-plus losers on our board today.

Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, the indices gapped up, ran hard early on, pulled back and tested successfully, and then bounced back in the afternoon to close with gains for the day.

The rally rolls on.
