Another Strong Stock Session

The stock market indices had another strong session, despite a morning pullback, rallying the rest of the day to close at the session highs going away.

Net on the day, the Dow was up 65.16 at 12,266.75. The S&P 500 was up 7.48 at 1312.62. The Nasdaq 100 was up 14.43 at 2306.77. The indices closed either at or within pennies of the session high.

Advance declines were very positive by better than 2 to 1 on the New York Stock Exchange, but Nasdaq was barely ahead by only 27 issues today, which could be a concern. Up/down volume was 3 to 2 positive on New York. Nasdaq traded 1.6 billion and also had a 3 to 2 positive ratio.

TheTechTrader.com board had a big day today, with several point-plus gainers. Leading the way, E-Commerce China Dangdang Inc. (DANG) was up 3.42 to 24.36, Youku.com Inc (YOKU) 1.91 to 67.27, Qihoo 360 Technology Co. Ltd. A (QIHU) 2.12 to 34.04, and ChinaCache International Holdings Ltd. (CCIH) 2.10 to 18.05.

There was very strong action in Chinese stocks today.

Indian stocks were strong as well. Rediff.com India Ltd. (REDF) was up 1.69 to 10.88 on 5.8 million, and Sify Technologies Limited (SIFY) 60 cents to 6.46,

In addition, Apple Inc. (AAPL) jumped 6.01 to 337.86, VirnetX Holding Corp (VHC) 2.73 to 24.73, Velti Plc (VELT) 2.00 to 15.70, Westport Innovations Inc. (WPRT) 1.05 to 24.93, and Perfect World Co., Ltd. (PWRD), one of our day trades, up 2.59 to 28.14. CROCS Inc. (CROX) advanced 1.10 to 19.45.

Among other gainers of note, Brigham Exploration Co. (BEXP) snapped back 74 cents to 33.26. Allot Communications Ltd. (ALLT) gained 63 cents to 14.73, Inhibitex Inc. (INHX) 38 cents to 4.40, Ku6 Media Co., Ltd. (KUTV) 94 cents to 5.67, and Ocz Technology Group Inc. (OCZ) 65 cents to 9.60.

On the downside, point-plus losers included Travelzoo Inc. (TZOO), down 3.84 to 73.90. Rare Element Resources Ltd. (REE) lost 1.16 to 14.12 in a weak rare-earth group. Also in that group, China Shen Zhou Mining & Resources, Inc. (SHZ), which had a negative opinion from their CPA firm, fell 1.29 to 4.60. Molycorp, Inc. (MCP) dropped 1.22 to 73.96, Goldman Sachs (GS) lost 1.92 to 151.86, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (CMG) was off 3.52 to 279.85, and Amarin Corporation plc (AMRN) gave back 1.28 from Monday’s huge gain closing at 15.82.

Ultra-short ETF iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (VXX) was down 1.36 to 26.77.

Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, the indices gapped up at the opening, then sold off in a corrective-looking matter, came on late morning and rallied the rest of the session to close at the session highs going away. It was a very nice move for the indices. However, they closed at the two-week declining tops line and moving averages on the S&P 500, and there may be some resistance and difficulty making any further headway here without a pullback or retest.
