Indices Surge In Afternoon Turnaround
The stock market indices had a topsy-turvy session. They were up sharply in the early morning, reaching the session morning highs in the first half hour. A 3-wave decline into midday took them to new session lows for the day only to turn it around. They spiked back up to resistance, and then backed and filled for the next hour and retested before a late surge brought them near the session highs at the end of the day.
Net on the day, the Dow was up 143.95 at 11,320.71, more than 207 points off its low. The S&P 500 was up 15.25 at 1177.60, 21 points off the low, and the Nasdaq 100 up 15.77 at 2145.04, nearly 40 points off the low.
It was a very strong turn-around day and it closed near the session highs. A very bullish day indeed.
Advance-declines were 21 to 9 positive on the New York Stock Exchange, and 17 to 8 positive on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was about 3 1/2 to 1 positive on New York, with advancing volume of just over 1.76 billion. Nasdaq traded over 1.8 billion shares and had a 13 to 5 positive ratio.
It was an excellent day on Wall Street.
TheTechTrader.com board, as a result, was vastly higher. Large-cap stocks had a good day today. Apple Inc. (AAPL) was up 2.58 to 376.18, Goldman Sachs (GS) snapped back 3.45 to 110.31, International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) jumped 2.44 to 166.76, SodaStream International Ltd. (SODA) took back 1.33 to 34.91, Global Crossing Ltd. (GLBC) rose 1.08 to 27.90, and Aspen Technology Inc. (AZPN) gained 2.39 to 16.27. Research In Motion Limited (RIMM) also added 1.07 to 28.57.
With gold dropping today, the PowerShares DB Gold Double Short ETN (DZZ) was up 45 cents to 4.79 and the ProShares UltraShort Silver (ZSL) up 1.05 to 12.88, although that traded as high as 13.30 earlier in the day.
Among other stocks of note, Trinity Industries Inc. (TRN) was up 2.51 to 24.88, or 11%. Avago Technologies Limited (AVGO) gained 3.01 to 32.27, or 10%, with Fossil, Inc. (FOSL) up 6.20 to 92.72 , or 7%. Yandex N. V. (YNDX) advanced 2.02 to 30.95, or 7%, and Navistar International Corp. (NAV) 2.51 to 40.34, along with Temple-Inland Inc. (TIN) up 1.42 to 22.75 and China Unicom (Hong Kong) Limited (CHU) 1.08 to 19.03.
On the downside, the Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) was down 5.00 to 59.97, the Direxion Daily Large Cap Bear 3X Shares (BGZ) down 1.88 to 43.49, VelocityShares Daily 2x VIX ST ETN (TVIX) 2.30 to 55.11, and the Direxion Daily Small Cap Bear 3X Shares (TZA) 2.31 to 47.79.
Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, the indices were up sharply in the morning, pulled back in a fast and steep 3-wave decline, but then came back to 50% retracement, consolidated bullishly, and then went on to take out the highs at the end of the day.
It was another spectacular, strong session for the indices, although volume was less than desired. But we’ll take it anyway.
