The stock market indices went somewhat higher today. After yesterday’s late rally, they started out today with a little pop to the upside, met resistance, and backed off. In the morning, we noted there was an orderly pullback that looked corrective. That triggered a steady afternoon rise that took the indices up to resistance. They pulled back hard late in the day off resistance, and then snapped back right up to those levels and closed not too far off the session highs for the day.
Net on the day, the Dow was up 44.73 at 11,105.85, which was more than 120 points off the low. The S&P 500 was up 10.60 at 1172.87, 15 points off its low, and the Nasdaq 100 up 28.74 at 2220.58, about 31 points off its low.
Advance-declines were better than 3 to 1 positive on both the New York Stock Exchange and on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was 3 1/2 to 1 positive on New York, with a total volume was over 1 billion shares traded. Nasdaq traded over 1.9 billion shares, and had nearly a 6 to 1 positive volume ratio.
It was a very strong session for the indices technically.
TheTechTrader.com board, as a result, was mostly higher. Leading the way today was Apple Inc. (AAPL), up 4.68 to 384.62, and Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN), up 2.97 to 219.53, but the star of the day was Universal Display Corp. (PANL), up 5.98 to 57.21.
Other stocks of note included Westport Innovations Inc. (WPRT), a swing trade, up 3.06 to 30.74. Genco Shipping & Trading Ltd. (GNK), another swing trade of ours, reached secondary and third levels of targets today, getting as high as 9.75 before closing at 9.51, up 1.34, or about 16.4%, on 2. 7 million shares, big volume for this stock. Silicon Motion Technology Corp. (SIMO), which we highlighted as a swing trade today, rose 99 cents to 11.86. SodaStream International Ltd. (SODA) was an outstanding stock today, up 3.41 to 42.25, and QR Energy, LP (QRE) gained 1.84 to 19.62.
In addition, Brigham Exploration Co. (BEXP), in a strong junior oil group, was up 1.06 to 29.17, and Acme Packet, Inc. (APKT) added 1.06 to 50.58.
Also on the upside today was Velti Plc (VELT), up 1.29 to 8.10, or 19%, Cornerstone Therapeutics Inc. (CRTX) 84 cents to 7.48, or nearly 13%, and DepoMed Inc. (DEPO) 68 cents to 6.33, or 12%. Endologix Inc. (ELGX) advanced 90 cents to 10.05, or nearly 10%.
On the downside, ultra-short ETF Direxion Daily Small Cap Bear 3X Shares (TZA) was down 2.33 to 44.99, the VelocityShares Daily 2x VIX ST ETN (TVIX) dropped 1.36 to 67.89, and the Direxion Daily Financial Bear 3X Shares (FAZ) fell 1.19 to 60.03.
There were a couple of surprise losers today. They included InterDigital, Inc. (IDCC) down 2.72 to 63.74, Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) 1.30 to 208.75, and even Google Inc. (GOOG) 60 cents to 529.52.
Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, the indices were up sharply early, backed off, consolidated bullishly, came on midday, pulled back late in the afternoon only to snapback in the last 20-30 minutes and close positive on the session with great technicals.
It was indeed a good day for the indices, but we will note that major declining topslines in this zone could meet with minimal resistance.
We’ll see what happens tomorrow.
