Stock Market Narrows with Indecision

Stock Market Narrows with Indecision

Good morning! Monday was an uneventful day for the market as a whole. After gapping up slightly, the remainder of the day lacked momentum and results were mixed by the close. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ($INDU) lost only 0.32 point on the day to close at 11,116.68. The S&P 500 ($SPX) rose 2.55 points to 1,284.13. The Nasdaq Composite ($COMPX) eked in a paltry 4.99 point gain, to close at 2,267.03, narrowly missing a closure of the morning gap.

Once open, the market did manage to hold onto the gains for about the first hour. Rounded highs and light volume on buying eventually gave way to a reversal as the morning progressed. A slow, but steady downtrend developed. This continued with three waves of selling on the 5 minute S&P 500 before the gap closed and the market reacted to that support level.

The remained of the day saw some a slight attempt by the bulls to regain control, but the upside backed strong volume to back up the buying and the pace was a lot more gradual overall than the prior selling. Both characteristics kept the market away from the morning highs and led to a retest and more congestion at the lower end of the range for the remainder of the day.

My bias into Tuesday is very open. The market does look a bit more bullish into the open, but it would not take much to bring back in more selling. Most of the stocks I have been trading lately have been as daytrades and have not relied as heavily on overall market bias. Instead I am focusing on stocks that have strong daily action in favor of the direction of an intraday setup to increase my odds in this more choppy market.
