Bulls Push Ahead in Stock Market

Good morning! It was a big day for the market on Tuesday as the market put in one its larger upside days of the year as long-term interest rates declined. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ($INDU) gained 75.32 points to close at 11,151.34, while the S&P 500 ($SPX) rose 13.35 points to end the day at 1,297.48. This marked a new 5-year high for the S&P. Even the Nasdaq Composite put aside its relative weakness in favor of a strong trend day, rallying 28.87 points to 2,295.90.

The market opened near Monday's close, but quickly expressed its preference by breaking strongly past the prior afternoon highs by 10:00 ET. The strongest pullback of the day took place at that time, taking the indices quickly back to their 5 and 15 minute 20 sma support. Once that hit, however, the upside began to resume. The pace was gradual initially, creating more of a reaction to the the day's highs. This pushed the indices into a more gradual correction, basing for about an hour, but still holding the trend channel support before making new intraday highs out of the 13:00 ET reversal period.

There was one more bull flag before the end of the day. Around 13:30 ET the market again began to base and pull back slightly. The 5 minute 20 sma didn't quite hit, but the zone of the support held and the market put in its last strong breakout of the day. This level held into the close with the last 90 minutes of the day seeing very little action as the indices simply fell into a congestion range along the highs.

On Wednesday, following the strong upside, we are more likely to see greater intraday overlap. I will be looking more towards playing pivots and reversal patterns.

Note: I'm going to be taking Thursday and Friday off, but this column will resume once more on Monday. I wish you good trading for the rest of the week!
