Around the Horn: Extra Innings for July 10

Monday we had five Stocks to Watch, one extra inning and three Around the Horn subscription service trades on our radar. Of these, four hit for profits, three were scratch trades and two were gapped.

Ensco International (ESV) was an Infield Fly short setup for Monday’s Around the Horn subscription service. ESV was gapped down well below our price off of the open, but later in the day traded back through this price and reversed. Entry was on the reversal (not the climb) and ESV quickly fell back down to morning lows and began sinking further. ESV could not stay below S2 however, and had come within 10 cents of our initial profit target of 63.13, so exit was anywhere from the break over S2 to the 50% to target level.

Eaton Vance (EV) was a Sinker short setup for Monday’s Around the Horn subscription service. This Sinker was textbook, testing yesterday’s highs off of the open, falling off of that level to and through the entry price, with a smooth ride down to the initial profit target. Beautiful.

Rockwell Automation (ROK) was a Fastball Long setup for Monday’s Stocks to Watch column. ROK hit our entry like a rocket off the open. After touching a high of 73.36, ROK began its decent back to earth. With a move this fast, exit was anywhere from the fall from this high to a cross below the 8 period moving average.

Frontier Oil Corp (FTO) was an Extra Inning Stock of Interest for Monday’s Stocks to Watch column. While I was still watching to see if there was any downside, I did say that I would be looking to the oil sector for direction. Well, that direction was clearly to the upside and there were intraday opportunities to the upside. The first was on the cross of R2, with an exit on the pullback from highs on the reversal of two closes and cross of the 8 period simple moving average. The second was on the break up from the consolidation on R2 with an exit end of day.

Extra Innings and Opportunities for Tuesday, July 10, 2007:

Mobile Telesystems was a Sinker short setup that was gapped up this morning. I will be looking for more downside tomorrow.

First American Corp (FAF) didn’t do much today with its Switch Hitter long and will be on the radar again tomorrow.
