Stocks Peter Out in Afternoon

It was an up-day for most indices, but it was disappointing in that the indices had the majority of their gains in the morning part of the session, and worked their way lower and closed at the low of the range for the session, still up on the day but with lackluster technicals, as the day was still an indecisive one.

Despite that the Dow was up 92.34, the S&P 500 up nearly 7 Ã,½, but the Nasdaq 100 was up barely 0.45. That was because the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOXX) was down nearly 3 points.

Advance /declines were negative by 73 issues on the NYSE, and by 230 issues on Nasdaq. Up/down volume was 4 to 3 negative on New York, on volume of 1.5 billion, and 4 to 3 negative on Nasdaq on volume of 2.1 billion.

TheTechTrader.com board was very mixed. There were some point-plus gainers and losers.

On the plus side, low-priced Gigabeam (GGBM)announced an important contract, and the stock exploded, at one point up more than 4.50, but gave back a chunk of it in the last hour. It closed up 2.05 on the day on 8.25 million.

Recent Chart of the Week Excel Maritime (EXM) in the shipping group, which we highlighted a couple weeks ago near 28, closed at 40.62, up 3.20 today on nearly 1 million.

Portfolio position China Medical Technologies (CMED) was up 1.84. Fuwei Films (FFHL) gained 90 cents, FuelTek (FTEK) 53 cents, and Jones Soda (JSDA) 73 cents. Portfolio position and Chart of the Week PRG-Schultz International (PRGX) jumped over 20, but closed at 19.33, up 63 cents, and recent Chart of the Week Versar (VSR) was up 62 cents.

In addition, Immersion Corp. (IMMR) had a very big day today, and jumped 1.79 on more than 2 mlllion shares. That was also a former Chart of the Week.

On the downside, JA Solar (JASO), down 1.09, and NCST, which gave back a big chunk of last week's gains, dropped 1.74 to 4.10, a big percentage loss there, on heavy volume of 9 Ã,½ million.

Transcend Services (TRCR) got smashed for 3.90, closing at 19.73. Rediff.com India (REDF) gave back 59 cents, MEDTOX Scientific (MTOX) 61 cents, and Global Solutions (GSOL) 57 cents. Chart of the Week Euroseas (ESEA) traded up to 17 but closed at 16.35 on a reversal day, down 55 cents.

Stepping back and reviewing the hourly chart patterns, the indices were rather indecisive today and the technicals showed it, as morning strength petered out in the afternoon and the indices closed near the lows for the session ,but above support. We'll see how it goes tomorrow.
